Abstract
Thirty-two samples removed on transparent sticky tape from the linen surface of the Holy Shroud of Turin from image, bloodstain, scorch, water stain and control areas were examined by light microscopy. None of the control samples (those with no image) showed pigment particles whereas 19 body image and blood image areas showed significant amounts of a very fine red iron oxide pigment. The examination of 8,000 fibers from both image and non-image areasshowed that the image areas had many more fibers uniformly stained from faint yellow to yel low. The Shroud image is made up of uniformly colored fibers (by some yet unknown mechanism) and a red iron earth pigment applied by hand. See 18-840 and 18-841. -- AATA
