A literature review summarizes information about the vegetable oils used in oil paintings. The kinetics of formation and the drying of oil film are described. The main factors causing the degradation of oil films, such as light, temperature, ozone and heavy metal ions are discussed. The methods of examining paint layers are briefly mentioned. -- AATA
