Abstract
Due to the development of methodology and the increase in volume of documentation in general and specifically for restoration, it has become necessary to redefine their terms and their use. A suggestion is made to extend the presently customary two terms to four different ones: original documentation for all evidence directly discernible on the object itself, primary documentation for all the picture and written data collected by those working with the object, secondary documentation for all further theoretical processing and storing of information, and tertiary documentation for the needs of special documentation -- profiles in the field. The restoration workshops of public institutes have here a special responsibility ranging from the restoration of buildings to the restoration of single works of art and the collection of historical examples of material.
