Abstract
Archival housings made of MicroChamber products have been shown to significantly reduce deterioration rates in collections of paper artifacts and photographic materials by effectively dealing with both internal and external causes of deterioration. The MicroChamber papers incorporate proprietary formulations of specific activated carbons and alkaline buffers designed to work together within multiple layers of precise porosities, to provide a chemical trap for oxidizing gases, their associated acids, and degradation by-products. The product has been tested as a housing for new and vintage book papers, where the deteriorative elements were by-products of paper deterioration exuded during accelerated ageing tests. Both alkaline and acidic papers housed in MicroChamber products demonstrated significantly higher strength after ageing than those housed in traditional alkaline bur=ffered conservation papers. Independent laboratory tests have also established that MicroChamber paper colmpetely protects microfilm against an extremely active oxidizing gas. Visual reproductions and data are presented. -- CAL
