Abstract
Accumulations of simple sugars were found on the surface of air -dried Scotch pine (<i>Pinus sylvestris L.) planks of which glucose and xylose were quantified showing surface concentrations on the order of 10 times those at the centers of the planks. A paper chromatographic technique employed in the observation of the phenomenon is discussed. Implications of the results are suggested, particularly in terms of structural timbers and preservative assessment work. 80% ethanol was used for extraction. Enrichment provides attractiveinvasion surfaces for fungi and insects. King, B. 1975, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Aston, Birmingham, England -- shows migration to be in outer 10 mm. of wood. King, B.; T A. Oakley and K. D. Long. 1974. Soluble nitrogen in wood and redistribution on drying. Mater. und Org. 9(4):241-254. -- shows redistribution of nitrogen in other species. -- AATA
