Abstract
The reconstruction of panel painting supports was carried out in the Fogg Art Museum Conservation Laboratory from 1934 until 1951 under the direction of George L. Stout and, later, Richard D. Buck. The general procedure is described in the fourth section of the report on the Care of Wood Panels which appeared in the 1955 issue of Museum (UNESCO). In this treatment procedure, dangerously deteriorated wood and gesso were removed from panel supports and replaced with new, stable, isolated and compatible materials to consolidate, strengthen and immobilize the supports and to protect and preserve their painted faces. In regard to the paintings so treated and recently examined at the Fogg Museum and elsewhere, the methods have proved themselves highly satisfactory in each of these respects. Summarized are the present conditions of the paintings treated and the research into the procedures employed in these treatments. See also 16-415 and 19-1601. -- AATA
