The traditional practice to procure old leather with buffers for the purpose of protecting it against further attack issuing from acidic sources is critically examined and, wherever necessary, revised. Case histories are discussed and used as a means to illustrate the author's point, that buffering is, at best, a conservation measure of relatively short duration.
