Abstract
The leather articles, found during archaeological excavations in Tartu and in Tallinn in 19811982, are of great historical importance. They add considerable information to our knowledge of the handicraft of the 11th-14th centuries in Estonia, and clarify trade relations with other towns of the Hanseatic League. Conservation of archaeological leather article finds includes measurement, photographic documentation, and technical drawings. The articles should also be examined from the point of view of history of art: i.e. their production methods, ornamentation, and material should be determined. Scientific analysis of the leather article assists in dating the finds and avoiding mistakes in conservation (deformation, etc). For conserving leather article finds the method by B. Mühlethaler, i.e. conservation by means of polyethylene glycol, has been applied. The results provide information on conservation of leather details, attribution of articles, and suggestions for reconstruction.
