Abstract
The 1983 exhibition at the Walters Art Gallery entitled Ivory: the Sumptuous Art provided the conservators at that institution with an excellent opportunity to study ivory and related materials in depth as almost every one of the close to 500 objects in the show required the attention of a conservator. The conservators developed a list of criteria for suitable materials for the treatment of ivory: good penetration, good adhesion, reversibility, no color change or decomposition, fairly neutral pH, removal requires no prolonged contact with water, application does not require heat. Acryloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate copolymer) met these criteria. New methods had to be developed for its use. One of the most successful, an adaptation of a treatment for fragile limestone, involved wetting and subsequent covering of the object with solvent before the consolidant was added to the container. Adhesives suitable for joins were also considered. Poly(vinyl acetate) AYAF and Acryloid B48N (methyl methacrylate copolymer) were among those chosen. See also 21-1334 for reference to proceedings. -- AATA
