Abstract
In the Eastern Mediterranean region, shellac is still a popular adhesive for the consolidation of archaeological material. This is due to its long tradition of use, its availability, and its ease of application. However, its disadvantages (cross-linkage, embrittlement, staining) outweigh its advantages (strength, versatility, thermoplasticity) -- all of which can be found in synthetic adhesives -- and therefore its use should be discontinued. See 21-1334 for reference to entire proceedings. -- AATA
