Abstract
In India many institutions have been established who are making efforts to restore and conserve Indian treasures and conduct research towards developing conservation techniques and materials for indigenous objects with specific problems of conservation related to the tropical climate. Education and training of conservators is one aspect that requires constant interaction and upgrading of standards in which the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is making a benchmark. It is felt that there is a greater need for exchange programs for conservators to enhance their skills, to practice and gain confidence in new conservation materials and methods. The paper discusses the status of conservation and training in India and specifically the role of various institutions and the contributions of the Indian Council of Conservation Institutes (ICCI) Delhi Centre, with emphasis on exchange programs for the benefit of the Indian community.
