Abstract
A short survey of those library and archival materials most vulnerable to degradation. The principal structural and chemical characteristics of paper, parchment, and leather are described, with illustrations of some deteriorated materials. The author notes that much is still unknown about both composition and deterioration processes, both prerequisites for the development of appropriate conservation and restoration techniques.
