Abstract
When either varnish or lacquer is present on copper and brass objects, either as a protective layer or as colored decoration, the restorer must apply a new coat at the end of restoration. The procedure is discussed in detail, including disassembly, cleaning, polishing, and grease removal by trichloroethylene. The varnish used is cellulose nitrate lacquer and the object must be submerged in it very slowly to avoid formation of air bubbles. Drying takes 24 hours and is best done over the bath. A damaged part can be restored later by cleaning it with acetone, removing any stains, and brushing the lacquer thinly.
