Abstract
In considering the lighting for the new extension to the National Gallery, existing design solutions were reviewed. Dissatisfaction was felt with those systems which in controlling daylight, eliminated those qualities of variability which both enabled the daylight to be recognisable as such, and contributed to the liveliness of the gallery interiors. An approach was thus sought which would retain this live light, while providing good picture illumination which complied with conservation requirements.
