Abstract
The column is adapted from an account which briefly describes the composition and characteristics of wood finishes commonly found in collections of American furniture. It suggests simple tests to distinguish shellac, lacquer, oil and varnish finishes and recommends the practice of recording the results in the museum catalog record to help assure appropriate care. -- AATA
