First of a series of guidelines for the preparation of books before conservation and repair treatments. The techniques and procedures were established during the period from 1966 to 1971 and used at the Biblioteca nazionale centrale of Florence after the flood. Basic workshop principles are given for cleaning and removal of the cover and spine, dry cleaning of paper and removal of pressure sensitive tape.
