Abstract
A description is given of a recent Paris exhibition which presented examples of the use of scientific methods in identifying, dating, preserving, and restoring various works of art. One entire room is devoted to graphic documents. Some of the scientific methods used are described, including radiographic examination of documents to determine their age and origin; and paper analysis by microscopic, microphotographic, chromatographic, and microchemical analysis. Beta-rays are used for studying paper structure, and modern optical methods -- viz., UV photography and holography -- are used for studying writing which is difficult to read. Physicochemical and biological methods are used for determining the causes of document deterioration. -- AATA
