Abstract
This paper attempts first to define archaeometry as consisting of physical and chemical studies of archaeologically derived materials by using examples of hearths and palaeomagnetism, shells and isotopes and bones and metal. This is followed by a case study of the complex relationship between the archaeometric scientist and the archaeologist, and concludes with a discussion on the impact of archaeometry on Australian and oceanic prehistory.
