Abstract
About 2000 enamelled items were examined, covering the period 200 B.C. to A. D. 700. Techniques, development, chronology, organization and areas of industry are considered and some experiments with millefiori making were conducted. There was no 3rd century break in manufacture, but a fresh start was made after the sub-Roman period. A system for accurate description of enamelwork is proposed and a glossary provided. -- AATA
