Abstract
Includes six papers on archaeological aspects of the Cave. D.J. Irwin (pp. 250-266) writes on Gough's Old Cave: its history (ownership, alterations, visitors' accounts). R. Burleigh (267-274), in Radiocarbon dates for human and animal bones from ten dated Mendip caves , tabulates some 40 dates and indicates that accelerator mass spectrometry and small-counter dating of more samples would be fruitful. Jill Cook (275-285) examined Marked human bones from Gough's Cave, Somerset with scanning electron microscopy and binocular light microscope, finding only natural damage, though a mandible may show human interference. A.P. Currant (286-304) on The Lateglacial mammal fauna of Gough's Cave, Cheddar, Somerset reveals a human predation assemblage dominated by wild horse, red deer, and Arctic hare, newly dated to 12,000 BP; another episode is of 10,000 BP.In Bird remains from Gough's Cave, Cheddar, Somerset C.J.O. Harrison (305-310) re-examines material dug 60 years ago, confirming the presence of forms reliably attributable to the main Late glacial phase of human occupation; some evidence of human modification. R.A. Parkin, P. Rowley-Conwy, & Dale Serjeantson (211-230) write on Late Palaeolithic exploitation of horse and red deer at Gough's Cave, Cheddar, Somerset ; human and carnivore marks can be differentiated, and various butchering activities were taking place in winter. -- AATA
