Abstract
Gives reasons for rejecting arguments by Flenniken and Raymond against chronology-building from artifacts, with particular reference to tool use and maintenance in the Great Basin (USA). Modern flintknappers do not have the inside track to truth. Chronology-building is a low-level activity but a necessary stage in understanding. -- AATA
