Abstract
The aim of ICOM 77 was to examine the place of museums in the system of culture and international cultural cooperation. The museum can be regarded as a communication medium, whose essential characteristics determine its place in the system of mass media. Marx is cited regarding the parallel between relics as sources of information about past societies and fossils as sources of information about past life forms. Museums accumulate historical experience and aesthetic values, and pass on progressive traditions. The Soviet approach to museums stems from the Leninist cultural policy, which is outlined at some length in this address. Museums were seen as important and were protected from the first days of the revolution. Currently, museums are contributing to mastering of cultural values, utilizing progressive traditions, raising educational level, and fostering feelings of friendship for all peoples. It is hoped that the 11th General Conference of ICOM will contribute toward drawing together the peoples and cultures of the world and bringing about mutual understanding and friendship.
