Abstract
A 1972 expedition to the Alamut Valley of northern Iran resulted in the discovery of nine castle sites along with the medieval pottery center at Andij. The lead glazed sgraffito pottery produced there was found at all castle sites visited. Several locations at the site yielded kiln wasters, but only one kiln was explored thoroughly. The cylindrical kiln was smaller than most Medieval Islamic kilns. Evidence for its construction and associated wasters are described. The pottery fits well with lead glazed earthenwares found throughout the Middle East from 900 - 1000 A.D. on. On stylistic grounds, the pottery is thought to date between the 10th and 13th centuries. Illustrations are provided.
