Abstract
A Roman tile making workshop excavated in East Sussex is described. A three part kiln consisting of a large stokehole, fire tunnel, and combustion chamber is the central feature. The kiln was intentionally filled in when abandoned. An archaeomagnetic date from the combustion chamber yielded a date of A.D. 100 - 130. Features associated with the kiln are interpreted as drying areas and a domestic area. Examination of charcoal from the kiln indicates an emphasis on birch, followed by oak. The varieties of tiles produced are described. A particular roller stamp of previously established distribution combined with the short life of the kiln suggest it was a temporary mobile brick yard which serviced a nearby iron working site.
