Abstract
Small whitish spots on albumen photographic prints apparently result from contact with bronze (actually brass) powders used in gilding photographic mounts and album pages. The author's work is intended to determine if this phenomenon may be caused by a reaction of the copper andor zinc of the bronze powder with the silver particles constituting the photographic image. X-ray fluorescence and examination under SEM are being used to identify materials and the exact nature of the degradation. Reproduction of the spots is also being attempted. This will provide a firmer basis for recommending treatment for this kind of deterioration.
