Abstract
This article concerns the history of papers used for photography, with emphasis on the contributions of Eastman Kodak. The design and improvement of photographic processes and photographic paper occurred simultaneously in the 1850s. During that period, paper was first made specifically for photographic use. Albumen-sized papers were used through the 1880s, when they gave way to gelatin printing papers. The first developing-out (as opposed to printing-out) process was introduced in 1881, giving birth to photogrpahic paper manufacturing. George Eastman imported fine paper from Europe until 1914, then undertook a research program to find a suitable substitute. By 1926, a satisfactory paper with stearate sizing had been discovered. Resin coated (RC) paper was introduced in 1960. Problems encountered initially with cracking of RC papers have been prevented by stabilizers that prevent oxidation of the polyethylene.
