Abstract
This paper concerns cataloguing of photographic collections. The nature of the collection's holdings and the kind of person who uses it must be considered in deciding how to organize a collection. The point is to match the organization to the way in which patrons ask for materials. Access dimension (or indexing criteria) then have to be decided upon. Then the mode of information presentation and retrieval will have to be determined. Possibilities include lists, card systems, and computerized database managers. Computerized systems are clearly the wave of the future, and one is currently (1982) being implemented at the Humanities Research Center, where the author works.
