Abstract
It was in 1968 that the Chester City Council launched an ambitious conservation program for the town. 20 years later, this report records the success of the program -- good cooperation between the central and local authorities, more than 600 buildings restored, public support and confidence, return of the inhabitants to the residential area -- an overall success for which the Council has been recompensed on several occasions. It must be pointed out, however, that within this very positive assessment, there are problems such as the exclusivity of the efforts directed to the historic town center, the loss of several protected buildings and also the inability to check the disappearance of craftsmanship. This book-balance sheet witnesses Chester's dynamic approach and also presents the numerous projects which the Council is preparing itself for in the future, meaning to consolidate its very active role in them.
