Abstract
This is an updated and expanded version of the book first published in 1973. Sections on: environmental factors detrimental to paper; procedures to be followed once the item is brought to the workshop for treatment; requirements for the care of paper. Environmental factors include light, acid, humidity, temperature and pests. Procedures include documentation; unframing and unmatting; dry, solvent and acqueous cleaning; flattening; methods of drying paper and mending edge tears; spray deacidification; matting; framing; encapsulation and folders for loose material; showcase design; storage methods. In relation to the care of paper: storage room furniture; workroom furniture; formulae are provided for mould nutrient; fungicide for pastes, adhesives and the preparation of magnesium bicarbonate and calcium hydroxide solutions. Two appendices cover suppliers (mainly U.S. Based) and workshop equipment. Notes, bibliography and index.
