Abstract
The conservation work done between 1920 and 1922 was the best that could be expected for the time to consolidate flaking painting, remove the inappropriately applied varnish, and discourage further biodeterioration. By 1953, the first stage of the conservation was to seal off the shrines from water seepage. Bat excreta contained certain chemicals which under damp conditions reacted upon the shellac coating; formic acid in alcohol, with other localized solvent treatments on accretions, has proved to be the most effective material for removal of this matter. Triethanolamine was then used for cleaning. Poly(vinyl acetate) is considered the safest and most effective preservative available in India. Work done at Ajanta, Kailasnatha, Thanjavur, Sitabhinji, and Elephanta is discussed.
