Abstract
In previous studies the authors presented the hypothesis and proved both directly and indirectly that marble sulfation takes place in the same way as metal corrosion. The model consists of a galvanic battery with, as negative pole, marble, positive pole: SO2/O2, and moisture, and with a solid electrolyte, gypsum. The determining stage for speed of sulfation after a thickness of gypsum of 300 A is the diffusion in solid state of the Ca2+. The present work presents additional proof of this model. To protect marble against sulfation, we used some of the same anticorrosive paints that protect metal against corrosion. To be more precise, we used coal tar epoxy and chlorinated rubber (paint brands), and we found a decrease in accelerated attack by SO2. The attack continued when the weight of the test tubes was increased, and EPMA identified the presence of gypsum on and/or in the protective film. It is interesting to note that the protection is many times more satisfactory with coal tar epoxy than with the pigmentless epoxy, and that, during the experiments, the film did not break into fissures in the same length of time as pigmentless epoxy does, or other such polymer protective films. Naturally, the color of these paints precludes their use on the surface of monuments.
