Abstract
In this paper we describe a research program, conducted in conjunction with the National Acidic Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) in the United States, that is attempting to quantify acid rain damage to carbonate stone resources. As part of this program, chemical models of carbonate stone dissolution have been used to define the limiting cases of acid rain damage. In addition, results of a weathering experiment have been evaluated in terms of the proposed chemical models. Both chemical modeling and field-exposure studies show that dissolution and associated surface recession increase with decreasing rain pH. Weathering experiments indicate that interaction of acid rain with carbonate stone has a reaction stoichiometry consistent with saturation equilibrium. A statistically significant linear relation has been found between the carbonate-stone surface-recession rate and the hydrogen ion loading to the stone surface.
