Abstract
The oxides of nitrogen contribute a significant amount of the total loading of air pollution and of acid rain. However, they do not seem to be present on carbonate stone to the same degree as sulfur dioxide. Thermochemical theory suggests that the nitrate reaction would not be favored. Moreover the situation is complicated by the possibility of nitrate fixation from the atmosphere through biological processes.
