Abstract
The Cathedral of Mechelen, Belgium, was chosen as a case study of the effects of polluted air and precipitation on historical buildings. Samples of stones, lime mortar, and slates were investigated by petrographical microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. An important part of the study consisted of describing the atmospheric environment around the Cathedral. First results are discussed in this article.
