Abstract
The historic bells of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London were initially cast in 1726 by the Rudhall Bell Foundry of Gloucester. They were retuned in 1920, and in 1986 it was decided to break up the 250-year-old bells and cast a smaller ring of replacement bells to be hung lower in the tower to minimize the risk of vibrational damage to the historic structure. The Australian and New Zealand Association of Bellringers (ANZAB) made it possible to bring the bells to the University of Western Australia, to add five bells to the original set (making the largest set of change ringing bells in the world), and to supply the metal (8.86 tons of copper and 2.65 tons of tin) to cast the new set for St. Martin-in-the-Fields. The bells were made at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, and the article describes the materials and techniques of the casting, with pictures. -- AATA
