Abstract
A survey of the main conservation problems in Bhutanese monasteries and the difficult local context led the authors to create a handbook to be used by temples caretakers, very often religious people with no conservation training. Simple drawings and texts explaining deterioration causes to the building and its contents, and cheap and applicable measures for preventing damage are exposed, emphasizing visual impact for a maximum effectiveness. The text, kept to a minimum, is bilingual English/Dzongkha and the printing was done locally. This project was financed by a Rolex Award for Enterprise. The handbook is in regular use in Bhutan, has also been transmitted through UNESCO to other Himalayan regions, and is now online on the ICCROMCollAsia website. The handbook is an on site, userfriendly training tool, aimed at basic education in the religious community. Its low key approach contributes to create awareness about conservation of cultural heritage.
