Abstract
Access to collection care training in the UK had diminished with the demise of Area Museum Councils. Several reports identified that the lack of training was putting collections at risk. The development of the Renaissance in the Regions Initiative put training back onto the museum agenda. The Renaissance At Work programme (RAW) was developed by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to provide practical training in all aspects of collection care to museum staff in the West Midlands Region. The paper outlines the background to the development of the Renaissance initiative and describes the Renaissance At Work programme and its aims. The effectiveness of the programme is discussed and the paper concludes by demonstrating that face to face training is still an effective and efficient tool in an increasingly digital age.
