Abstract
A brief history of samplers is given, along with common problems resulting from that history, such as bleeding dyes and poor mounting and framing methods. The reader is told how to store samplers safely until treatment, and advised against specific incorrect methods of cleaning and repair. Instructions are given for the following steps of cleaning a sampler: dry cleaning (i.e. dusting), testing for color-fastness, preparation of cleaning solution using WA paste, supporting and soaking the textile, rinsing, blotting, pinning out and drying. The authors advise how to choose and prepare a support fabric, and describe how to baste the sampler to the support and mount both on acid-free mat board. Framing and display instructions are also briefly given, and a list of suppliers is provided. -- AATA -- AATA
