Abstract
Anomalous areas in fabrics may, indeed, not be the result of yarn (barré) defects nor defects in dyeing so much as they are manifestations of visual illusions caused by the presence of contours, junctions or edges where lightness between samples varies locally. These factors, largely independent of the mechanism of perception of differences in chromaticity, are discussed. The Mach Band effect is reviewed. -- AATA
