Abstract
The spire of Salisbury Cathedral (England) the world's tallest medieval spire, has posed problems since its addition to the building in the late 13th century. Present concern is caused by poor condition of the stone, which needs extensive replacement. A system of three internal adjustable steel spaceframes will make possible replacement of stone without weakening the spire, by relieving the weight on each band as it is repaired. These spaceframes will be left in place after repair work is completed, to help stabilizing the spire and act as permanent reinforcement for its weakest points. Includes historical information on the structural problems of the cathedral.
