Abstract
The monument to Sir John and Lady Elizabeth Pole (ca. 1630) is one of a group of family monuments erected in a chapel in St. Andrews Church, Colyton, Devon. It is constructed of Beer stone, a local type of limestone, and is fully polychromed. Rising damp had caused iron fastenings within the structure to expand and the paint layers to blister and flake off. Conservation consisted in preconsolidation of paint, dismantling the monument, removing iron fastenings, cleaning, repair and rebuilding, incorporating damp-proof membranes to protect against future moisture damage. The monument is described; its condition before treatment reported, and the treatments applied detailed. Acknowledgements and a list of materials and suppliers are appended.
