The author examines the use of paint color in domestic British interiors from the late 17th to the early 19th century upon which scant information was available. The first year of his research was spent studying technical manuals covering the manufacture and application of house paint to arrive at an intimate knowledge of the working characteristics and limitations of each pigment. The second year, his research consisted in gathering information from the microscopic examination of cross-sections of surviving paintwork in a series of interiors. During the final year of research, he put his findings in thesis form, and his consulting work with the redecoration of a number of houses in the British Isles has allowed him to check the accuracy of his findings. -- AATA
