Everpresent groundwater and rain are the main causes of degradation of stone rock-cliff sculptures (Buddhas) carved directly on cliffs in Japan, 8th-19th centuries. Their condition is analyzed and building of large, overhanging shelters for them is discussed. Various methods of protection against rising damp -- such as installing drainage pipes, grouting, and hydroprobing the back of the sculptures -- are examined. The repair and consolidation work is detailed.
