Abstract
The Acropolis monuments face surface deterioration problems as well as structural degradation, due to the destructive action of corroded iron elements inserted earlier in this century to support and strengthen the weakened parts. A detailed study of the problem led to the conclusion that the most appropriate method to deal with the continuing damage was to dismantle the damaged parts, remove the iron pieces, restore each architectural member and reassemble the whole structure. Titanium was used as a substitute for ironbecause of its excellent corrosion resistance. A table shows the most important physical and structural properties of grade 2 commercially pure titanium. The welding method is indicated. The practice of titanium reinforcement is described according to whether it applies to architectural members acting in bending or those members acting in compression. Drawings, photos, and graphs reinforce the text. Tests took place to obtain the necessary data for the design of the reinforcements; for these tests, a special machine was devised to impose a tensional force on the anchored titanium bar. Pull-out and bending tests showed that the bond strength of the reinforcements inserted in the way described in the text is remarkable.
