Abstract
Swedish rune-stones and rock carvings are mostly inscribed in granite and gneiss; their texture gives them specific properties when weathering. Previous restorations of these works of art are unacceptable by present standards. Vandalism, graffiti, and the taking of casts by amateur researchers has led to further damage. The monuments are classified into four types according to the nature of the damage they have sustained.
