Abstract
A number of polymers produced in the USSR have been selected for various restoration processes of works of art at the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad by the Laboratory for Stone Conservation and the Restoration of Sculpture. For cleaning, film-forming polymer solutions are used, as for instance a water solution of the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose plasticized with glycerol; or solutions using organic solvents; or dilute aqueous solutions of the water-soluble ethers. For repairing small defects on the surface of stone sculpture, putties which closely imitate the texture and color of the material to be filled have been developed. To protect sculpture from contamination, dust, and pollution, compositions of vinyl polymer solutions that form an invisible film are applied. Examples of objects treated are given and illustrated.
