Abstract
The first successful production of soft-paste porcelain in Europe was at Saint Cloud ca. 1695, and the first hard porcelain was made at Meissen in 1708. These innovations were the beginning of a century of revolution in ceramic manufacture, science, and engineering that led to a wholly new outlook on the nature of these activities, and their place in society. The essence and sequence of the changes in ceramic compositions and technology are surveyed and related in a preliminary way to parallel developments in science, engineering, manufacturing, and society at large. -- AATA
