Abstract
For a systematic study of the characteristic features of Chinese celadon products, a large number of sherds were investigated. It was found that (1) chemical composition of the bodies indicated that the Yue wares (from the Eastern Han to the Tang Dynasty), Southern Song Yinqing, and the Yuan Dynasty's Shufu wares are high in silica. Relatively speaking, the famous Ru, Linru, and Yaozhou wares - and others in north China and Longquan Ge, as well as the imitations of Ru, Guan, and Ge wares - are high in alumina. Both Longquan Di and Guan wares are intermediate. (2) The glaze compositions of Yue wares and the North Dynasty, Sui, Tang, and North Song's Yaozhou wares, as well as the Yingqing ware, belong to the system CaO-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-SiO* l2*s, the so-called lime glaze ; but the glazes of Ru, Lingru, Longquan Ge, Di, Guan, and the imitations of Ru, Guan, and Ge belong to the system CaO-K<sub>2</sub>O-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-SiO<sub>2</sub>, the so-called lime-alkaline glaze. (3) Microscopic and x-ray diffraction examinations indicated that almost all of the celadon bodies contained a large amount of quartz, a small amount of mullite, and a few cristobalite crystals but the microstructure of the glazes consisted more or less of quartz and anorthite crystals dispersed in the glaze. Almost no crystals can be found in the Yingqing glaze. (4) Spectroreflectance and chromatic examinations revealed that the various Chinese celadon glazes possess different qualities and unique aesthetic styles. The glaze colors of Ru, Linru, and Yaozhou in north China, as well as Longquan Ge, Di, Guan, and Yingqing are very special in the repertory of Chinese celadons. -- AATA
