A general account of procedures used for the analysis of binders of air drying solvent-based paints, vis. alkyd, epoxy, polyurethane and acrylic, is given. This is followed by detailed accounts of the separation of mixtures of alkyd resin with chlorinated rubber or chlorinated paraffin and of the temary mixture by column chromatography on silica gel. Finally, the separation and identification of blends of polydiene resin with polyisobutene or alkyl benzene plasticisers by combined GPC (on Styragel with tetrahydrofuran solvent) and IR spectroscopy is described.
