The results of experiments to evaluate the EDTA method of pretreating bones for archaeological studies are given for newly dated samples more than 1000 years old. Interlaboratory checks, together with checks using samples measured exclusively in Uppsala, indicate that the EDTA method is reliable. Samples subjected to different HC1 treatments may yield faulty results, although the HC1 treatment can be improved to produce reliable results. -- AATA
